The Salvation Army Hawaii has been helping people in need for more than 130 years. We have seen many changes since then, but one thing remains constant: God calls us to serve those who are most vulnerable. Today, The Salvation Army Community Assistance Center provides emergency services, including food, clothing, hygiene kits, and case management to everyone who needs it —regardless of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.
For many, making ends meet is a daily challenge, forcing people to choose between things like rent and putting food on the table. We understand the stress these situations put on families and are here to help.
"I couldn't work and I fell behind on my rent. We moved to six places in the last year and were homeless for two months. Being a business owner, I didn't think that I would be in the position to need anyone's help." Isabella called the Family Services Office and was able to get a rent check in less than a week. "I'm so thankful. Not being able to work because of my back had set us back so much. The Salvation Army is a blessing to single moms like me."
Emergency Material Assistance
Emergency food bags are provided to families and individuals who live in Honolulu and surrounding communities. Food bags last approximately three days and consist of an assortment of non-perishable items. Since much of the food we give out requires preparation, homeless individuals or families looking for a complete meal are encouraged to utilize the food pantry at the Kauluwela Corps on Wednesdays from 12:30pm - 2:30pm. The food pantry is located at 296 N. Vineyard Boulevard, Honolulu, HI 96817.
Clothes vouchers are also available for use at The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Honolulu. If no other resources are available, these can be used to purchase clothes for work, job interviews, or professional meetings. Recipients must present a referral from a case manager or social worker to set up an appointment.
Emergency clothing is available for immediate distribution pending inventory levels. Individuals will be asked to complete a material assistance application at our Kauluwela office.
Financial Assistance
The Salvation Army understands the impact of unexpected life changes. Maybe you lost your job. Maybe you're a senior living on a fixed income. Maybe you're living with a long-term disability. In a time of critical need, the Community Assistance Center is here to help. Our Emergency Financial Assistance Program provides critical, short-term rental and utility help to low-income families and individuals, aiding in the prevention of homelessness by bridging the gap between income and expenses.
Pending available funding, the Community Assistance Center will accept up to 15 completed applications between the 1st and the 10th of each month, or whichever comes first. You can reach out via phone at (808)841-5565 or email hicac@usw.salvationarmy.org to apply. If funding is available, you will be asked to submit a list of required documents for your application to be complete. A caseworker will then review your application to determine eligibility. Completion of the financial assistance application does not guarantee financial assistance.
Documents Required: Government-issued ID for all household adults, Social Security cards for all household members, lease agreement, utility bill, disconnection and eviction notice, income documentation and bank statements for the past two months, and benefits statements.
